‘The Enemy’ by Pearl S. Buck, noted by Podmeswar, Class 12, AHSEC

1. Who was Dr. Sadao? Where was his house?

Answer: Dr. Sadao was a Japanese surgeon. He went to America and studied medicine from there. He was simple, sober and kind hearted person.

OR: Dr. Sadao was a Japanese Surgeon who studied medicine and surgery in America.

            Dr. Sadao Hoki’s house was built on a spot of the Japanese Coast. The low, square stone house was set upon rocks well above a narrow beach which was outlined with bent pines.

 

2. Was Dr. Sadao being arrested?

Or: Was Dr. Sadao being arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy?

Answer: No, Dr. Sadao was not arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy. Dr. Sadao informed the old general about the American Prisoner of war (The Enemy) whom he had operated and cured. To this response, the old general promised that Dr. Sadao would not be arrested. The Old general also promised to send his private assassins to kill the white man silently and secretly and remove his body in the night.

 

3. Did Hana help the wounded man and wash him herself?

Answer: Yes, definitely Hana did. Hana and Dr. Sadao carried the wounded man into his house. When Yumi (The maid) refused to wash the white man then Hana dipped a small clean towel into the steaming hot water and washed the white man’s face carefully. Also, Hana and Dr. Sadao looked after the wounded man until he was cured.

 

4. What did Dr. Sadao and his wife, Hana do with the white man or the enemy or the wounded man?

Anwer: At first, Dr. Sadao and his wife, Hana decided to put the white man or the enemy or the wounded man back into the sea. Later, they took a decision to bring the owned man to his senses. So, they carried him into his house and looked after him until he was cured. Dr. Sadao operated upon him and extracted a bullet from his body. Finally, Dr. Sadao managed a boat with other essential goods for the enemy or the white man to escape successfully and falsely informed the old general that he had escaped (himself).     

 

5. What did Dr. Sadao do to get rid of the white man?

Answer: To get rid of the white man or the enemy, Dr. Sadao informed the old general that he had operated upon a white man. The old general promised Sadao not to arrest him and promised him to send his private assassins to kill the man and remove his body in the night. When the white man was not killed in the three nights, then Dr. Sadao managed a boat with other essential goods and escaped away the white man from his house. Also, Dr. Sadao falsely informed the old general that he (the white man) had escaped (himself).    

 

6. Why did the messenger come to Dr. Sadao or Dr. Sadao’s house?

Answer: On the seventh day in the afternoon, a messenger came to Dr. Sadao or Dr. Sadao’s house in official uniform. Hana was afraid of arresting Dr. Sadao. But, the messenger informed that Dr. Sadao had to come to the palace. The messenger also said that the old general was in pain again. That means, the messenger came to Dr. Sadao or Dr. Sadao’s house to inform about the serious old pain of the old general and came to invite Dr. Sadao to the palace.

 

7.  Who was Hana? What did she notice coming out of the mist?

Answer: Hana was the wife of Dr. Sadao who was a very caring, loving and sympathetic woman. Dr. Sadao met her at a party which was held for foreign students at an American professor’s house.

            Hana and Sadao saw something black come out of the mists. It turned out to be a man, as if flung up out of the ocean, staggering a few steps, his body outlined against the mist and arms above his head. Hana and Dr. Sadao noticed something black come out of mist, which they later came to know was a man (the prisoner or the soldier).

 

8. Who was Hana? How did she met Dr. Sadao?

Answer:   Hana was the wife of Dr. Sadao who was a very caring, loving and sympathetic woman. Dr. Sadao met her at a party which was held for foreign students at an American professor’s house.

 

 

9. Write a character-sketch of Dr. Sadao Hoki as depicted in “The Enemy”. (7 Marks)

Answer: In the story, “The Enemy”, Dr. Sadao is the main hero and protagonist. Dr. Sadao was a Japanese surgeon. He went to America and studied medicine from there. He was simple, sober and kind hearted person. His wife named Hana, a caring, loving and sympathetic woman. He met her at a party which was held for foreign students at an American professor’s house.

            One day, Dr. Sadao and Hana found a wounded soldier or prisoner on the sea-shore. The prisoner or soldier was an American and their enemy for their country. So, at first, they thought of putting the soldier or prisoner back into the sea. But, they carried him to their house. Dr. Sadao and Hana looked after him and took an operation. After some days of treatment, he was cured and became fully conscious.

            Later, Dr. Sadao managed a boat and other essential goods to escape for the soldier or prisoner and finally he escaped successfully. But, Dr. Sadao falsely informed to the General that he was escaped.

            Thus, Dr. Sadao played role of a kind-hearted person and a fine doctor who had done his work as a human being in “The Enemy”.
