1. Read the following passage carefully:

       1. At 4.30 P.M., Abha brought in the last he was ever to eat; it consisted of goat’s milk, cooked    

 And rav Vegetables, oranges and a connection of ginger, sour lemons strained butter with juice of aloe. Setting on the floor of his room in the rear of Birla House in New Delhi, Gandhi ate and talked with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Deputy Prime Minister of the new government of independent India. Maniben, Patel’s daughter and secretary, was also present. The of conversation was important. There had been rumours of differences between Patel and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. This problem, like so many others had been dropped into the Mahatma’s lap.

       2. Abha, alone with Gandhi and the Patel’s, hesitated to interrupt. But she knew Gandhi’s attachment to punctuality. Finally, therefore, she picked up the Mahatma’s nickel-plated watch and showed it to him.

‘I must tear myself away’, Gandhi remarked, and so saying  he rose, went to the adjoining bathroom and then started towards the prayer ground in the large park to the left of the house. Abha, the young wife of kanu Gandhi, grandson of the Mahatma’s cousim, and Manu, the granddaughter of another cousim, accompanied him; he leaned his forearms on their shoulders. ‘My walking sticks’, he called them.

      3. During the daily two-minute promenade through the long, red-sandstone colonnade that lad to the prayer ground, Gandhi relaxed and joked. Now he mentioned the carrot juice Abha had given him that morning.

     4. ‘So you are serving me cattle fare,’ he said, and laughed.

     5. ‘Ba used to call it horse fare,’ Abha replied. Ba was Gandhi’s deceased wife.        

     6. ‘Isn’t it grand of me, Gandhi Bantered, ‘to relish what no one else wants?’

    7. ‘Bapu (father),’said Abha, ‘your watch be feeling very neglected. You would not look at it today.’

    8. ‘Why should I, since you are my timekeepers?’ Gandhi retored .

    9. ‘But you don’t look at the timekeepers,’ Manu noted Gandhi laughed again.

 

 On the basis of tour reading of the passage answer the following questions:

For the many traffics in Guwahati, accidents are usual happenings daily in this big city. More than 8 or 10 accidents’ report come daily from this city. Today also a terrible road accident took place in Zoo-Road between a school bus and a passengers’ bus. The school bus was returning from the school and at that time an over speeding passengers’ bus crossed in front of the school bus. The bus driver tried to take a sharp turn to save the accident/struck, but unfortunately head-on collision/hit/stuck with a traffic point. Many passengers of the bus were injured in the heavy jolted and a school-going boy had dead instantly. The injurious passengers were brought to J.M.C.H. by 108 Service immediate and the School boy was forwarded for post-mortem. The both drivers were arrested by the police.  The police are inquiring and investigating for more informations. Now, a sorrowful moment is affecting at this place.

Answer: In this phrase, the poetess, Kamala Das explains a moment driving towards the Cochin Airport. At that moment, the poetess saw her mother who sat beside her and she dozed with open mouthed. Also, she observes her mother’s ashen like face which looks like a corpse.

 

(iii) What is the message that Keats wants to convey through “A thing of Beauty”?

Answer: Through “A thing of beauty”, Keats wants to give/convey the message that a thing of beauty is joy forever and it always brings us happiness. It also provides us the delightful and some satisfaction from the gloomy, unhealthy and darkened ways of life.

Answer: The lesson was called the last lesson because that was the last lesson of French language. The fact was that the order had come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine from the next day.

 

 

(b) What had been put up in the bulletin board?

Answer:  All the bad news for the last two years had been displayed on the bulletin board at that morning. These were- the lost battles, the draft, the orders of the commanding officer and some other bad news. So, the people or a crowd gathered in front of the bulletin-board.

 

 

(c) What does Saheb look for in the garbage dumps? Where is he and where has he come from?

Answer: Saheb looks for gold in the garbage dumps.

            He is a ragpicker of Seemapuri, a place on the periphery of Delhi. He comes from Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1971.

Answer: Saheb does not like or happy at working his job at the tea-stall.  His face has lost the carefree look. Because, Saheb is no longer his own master. The steel canister seems heavier than the plastic bag for him and his situation.

14.Answer any one of the following questions in 80-100 words: 5

 

(a) Describe the miserable plight of the people of Firozabad.

Answer:. Every other family in Firozabad is engaged in making bangles. More than 20000 children also engage on it. None of them know that it is illegal. The children work in the glass furnaces with high temperatures, in dingy cells without air and light. They slog their daylight hours an often losing the brightness of their eyes.

They live in stinking lanes choked with garbage where they remain hovels with crumbling walls, wobbly doors and no windows. They live in crowded with families of humans and animals coexisting in a primeval state. They are born in the cast of bangle makers. They have seen nothing except bangles, in the house, in the yard, in every other house, every other yard, every street in Firozabad.

Their eyes are more adjusted to the dark than to the light outside. That is why; they often end up losing their eyesight before they become adults. They have not enjoyed even one full meal in their entire lifetime. They do not know anything except bangles. They cannot dare to change it for the police and the middlemen.

(b) Describe the efforts made by R.K. Shukla to persuade Gandhi to go to Champaran.

Answer: R. K. Shukla was a sharecropper of Champaran. He went to the December 1916 annual convention of the Indian National Congress party to meet Mahatma Gandhi. He wanted Gandhi to go to his district for the injustice of the landlord system in his district. Gandhi did not take any step for Shukla because he had an appointment in Cawnpore and was also committed to go to other parts of India.

Shukla was a resolute person. He followed Gandhi to the ashram and the other places. He never left Gandhi’s side until the fix date. Impressed by Shukla, Gandhi said that he had to be in Calcutta on such-and-such a date and advised to come and meet him and take him from there.

On the appointed date and spot in Calcutta, Shukla met Gandhi and boarded a train for the city of Patna in Bihar and Champaran.

Thus, Shukla tried every effort to persuade Gandhi to go to Champaran.

Answer:  People are afraid of and disdain for Derry’s face. One day, a woman comments that his face is a terrible thing. She also comments that only a mother can love this face.

            Because, Derry’s one side of his face was burnt. Once, he got acid all down that side of his face. Then, it burned it all away and ate his face up.

 

(d) Why did Zitkala-Sa feel uncomfortable in the dining room ? (Not in the syllabus of 2021)

 

(e) Why did Bama feel terribly sad and provoked ? (Not in the syllabus of 2021)

 

(f) Who should be friends, according to both Derry and Mr. Lamb?

Answer: According to both Derry and Mr. Lamb, those people pass in the street and might even speak to them, but never see them again and still retain friendship with them, they should be friends.
