My Favourite Tourist Destination: Manali

Manali, nestled in the heart of the Himachal Pradesh mountains, is one of my favorite tourist destinations. This picturesque hill station offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility, making it an ideal getaway for all kinds of travelers. Here are a few reasons why Manali holds a special place in my heart:

1.      Breathtaking Natural Beauty: Manali is famous for its stunning landscapes, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, lush green valleys, and serene rivers. The sight of the Beas River flowing gently through the valley, with towering mountains in the backdrop, is nothing short of mesmerizing. The beauty of the place is at its peak during the winter season when everything is covered in a blanket of snow, creating a picturesque winter wonderland.

2.      Adventure Activities: For adventure enthusiasts, Manali offers a variety of activities. Whether it's trekking, skiing, paragliding, or river rafting, there’s something for everyone. One of the most thrilling experiences I had in Manali was skiing on the slopes of Solang Valley. The adrenaline rush from flying through the air while paragliding over the mountains is an unforgettable experience.

3.       Peaceful Retreat: Despite being a popular tourist destination, Manali offers moments of peace and solitude. The local monasteries, such as the Hadimba Temple, provide a calm and spiritual atmosphere, allowing visitors to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The cool, crisp mountain air and the tranquility of the surroundings make it an ideal place for relaxation and reflection.

4.      Local Culture and Cuisine: Manali also has a rich cultural heritage. The local Himachali culture is evident in the traditional architecture, festivals, and handicrafts. The bustling Mall Road offers a variety of local food, from steaming momos to traditional Himachali dishes like sidu and chana madra. The vibrant local markets are filled with handicrafts, woolen clothes, and souvenirs, making it a great place to shop.

5.      A Destination for All Seasons: Whether it's the winter snow or the summer sun, Manali is a year-round destination. The summers are perfect for outdoor activities like trekking and sightseeing, while the winters offer a magical snow-covered experience, ideal for skiing and snowboarding. No matter when you visit, Manali never fails to charm its visitors.

In conclusion, Manali is a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, culture, and peace. Whether you’re looking for a thrilling adventure, a peaceful retreat, or simply a chance to experience the rich culture and traditions of the region, Manali offers something for everyone. That’s why it remains my favorite tourist destination.

A Visit to the Taj Mahal: A Place of Historical Interest

One of the most memorable experiences in my life was a visit to the Taj Mahal, located in Agra, India. As one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture and a symbol of eternal love. Here are the reasons why this historical monument left a lasting impression on me:

1.      Architectural Grandeur: The Taj Mahal is an architectural marvel, made of white marble, which glows under the sunlight. The intricate carvings, delicate inlay work, and the grand dome create a majestic sight. The symmetrical layout, the reflecting pools, and the beautiful gardens surrounding the monument add to its grandeur, making it a perfect example of Mughal craftsmanship.

2.      Historical Significance: The Taj Mahal was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth in 1631. The monument symbolizes the deep love and devotion of the emperor for his wife. The historical story behind its construction adds emotional value to the experience of visiting the site. It took over 20 years and thousands of artisans to complete the Taj Mahal, making it a remarkable feat of engineering and artistry.

3.      The Tomb and Surroundings: The main structure houses the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. As I entered the tomb, the calmness and reverence of the place were palpable. The interior of the Taj Mahal is equally impressive, with marble floors, intricate patterns, and a serene atmosphere. The surroundings, with their lush green gardens, perfectly complement the white marble monument, adding to the peaceful ambiance.

4.      Cultural and Tourist Appeal: The Taj Mahal attracts millions of visitors every year, not just from India, but from across the world. The monument stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and is a symbol of the country's glorious past. Visitors can also explore other historical sites nearby, like Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, which further enhance the historical experience.

5.      A Personal Reflection: Visiting the Taj Mahal felt like stepping into a piece of history. The emotions tied to the monument’s creation, combined with its beauty, made the experience both humbling and awe-inspiring. The grandeur of the monument and the personal love story behind it left me with a deep sense of admiration for the history and culture of India.

In conclusion, the Taj Mahal is not only a symbol of love but also a remarkable example of India’s architectural and historical legacy. My visit to this iconic monument made me appreciate the grandeur of Mughal architecture and the cultural richness of India. It’s a place where history comes alive, and every visitor leaves with a sense of awe and respect for its beauty and significance.

59. You are Arshad / Afreen. Write a report for your local English newspaper on the lack of open spaces and playgrounds in your city/town. Highlight the importance of such spaces for the people pointing out the duties and responsibilities of the civic authorities in this regard.

Answer:

Title: Guwahati Gasping for Breath: The Vanishing Open Spaces

By: Arshad/Afreen, Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June, 2025: The rapid urbanization of Guwahati has led to a critical shortage of open spaces and playgrounds, leaving the town’s residents, particularly the youth and children, with nowhere to engage in physical activities. Once known for its greenery, the town is now a concrete jungle where every available plot is being converted into commercial or residential buildings.

Importance of Open Spaces Open spaces are the "lungs" of a city. They are essential for:

·         Physical Health: Providing children and athletes with a safe environment for sports and exercise.

·         Mental Well-being: Offering a sanctuary for senior citizens and residents to relax and reduce stress.

·         Social Interaction: Serving as community hubs for cultural gatherings and social bonding.

Duties of Civic Authorities The local civic authorities have a mandatory responsibility to ensure a balanced urban layout. It is their duty to:

1.      Enforce Land-Use Policies: Strictly protect designated park areas from illegal encroachment and commercialization.

2.      Infrastructure Development: Reclaim unused government land to develop modern parks and well-maintained playgrounds.

3.      Urban Planning: Ensure that any future residential permits include a mandatory percentage of land dedicated to green zones.

Without immediate intervention, the lack of these spaces will lead to a sedentary lifestyle and a decline in the overall quality of life for the people of Guwahati.

Write a substance of the following. 3

Early rising leads to health and happiness. The man who rises late can have little rest in course of the day. Anyone who lies on bed late is compelled to work till a late hour in the evening. He has to go without the evening exercise which is so necessary for his health. In spite of all his effort his work will not produce as good results as that of the early riser. The reason for this is that he cannot take advantage of the refreshing hours of the morning. Some people say that the quiet hour of midnight is the best time for working. Several thinkers say that they can write best only when they burn the midnight oil. Yet it is true to say that few men have a clear brain at midnight, when the body needs rest and sleep.

Answer:

Substance:

Early rising promotes both health and happiness. Those who rise late tend to have less rest during the day and end up working late into the evening, missing out on essential evening exercise. As a result, their work is often less effective than that of early risers. Some believe that working late into the night is more productive, but in reality, few people can think clearly at midnight when the body needs rest.
