1. Read the following passage carefully:

       1. At 4.30 P.M., Abha brought in the last he was ever to eat; it consisted of goat’s milk, cooked    

 And rav Vegetables, oranges and a connection of ginger, sour lemons strained butter with juice of aloe. Setting on the floor of his room in the rear of Birla House in New Delhi, Gandhi ate and talked with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Deputy Prime Minister of the new government of independent India. Maniben, Patel’s daughter and secretary, was also present. The of conversation was important. There had been rumours of differences between Patel and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. This problem, like so many others had been dropped into the Mahatma’s lap.

       2. Abha, alone with Gandhi and the Patel’s, hesitated to interrupt. But she knew Gandhi’s attachment to punctuality. Finally, therefore, she picked up the Mahatma’s nickel-plated watch and showed it to him.

‘I must tear myself away’, Gandhi remarked, and so saying  he rose, went to the adjoining bathroom and then started towards the prayer ground in the large park to the left of the house. Abha, the young wife of kanu Gandhi, grandson of the Mahatma’s cousim, and Manu, the granddaughter of another cousim, accompanied him; he leaned his forearms on their shoulders. ‘My walking sticks’, he called them.

      3. During the daily two-minute promenade through the long, red-sandstone colonnade that lad to the prayer ground, Gandhi relaxed and joked. Now he mentioned the carrot juice Abha had given him that morning.

     4. ‘So you are serving me cattle fare,’ he said, and laughed.

     5. ‘Ba used to call it horse fare,’ Abha replied. Ba was Gandhi’s deceased wife.        

     6. ‘Isn’t it grand of me, Gandhi Bantered, ‘to relish what no one else wants?’

    7. ‘Bapu (father),’said Abha, ‘your watch be feeling very neglected. You would not look at it today.’

    8. ‘Why should I, since you are my timekeepers?’ Gandhi retored .

    9. ‘But you don’t look at the timekeepers,’ Manu noted Gandhi laughed again.

For the many traffics in Guwahati, accidents are usual happenings daily in this big city. More than 8 or 10 accidents’ report come daily from this city. Today also a terrible road accident took place in Zoo-Road between a school bus and a passengers’ bus. The school bus was returning from the school and at that time an over speeding passengers’ bus crossed in front of the school bus. The bus driver tried to take a sharp turn to save the accident/struck, but unfortunately head-on collision/hit/stuck with a traffic point. Many passengers of the bus were injured in the heavy jolted and a school-going boy had dead instantly. The injurious passengers were brought to J.M.C.H. by 108 Service immediate and the School boy was forwarded for post-mortem. The both drivers were arrested by the police.  The police are inquiring and investigating for more informations. Now, a sorrowful moment is affecting at this place.

The Edufair 2015 was organized by Assam tribune Pvt. Ltd. in Guwahati, on 8th October 2015. Many top College and universities of India participated in the fair. It was an interactive session where students of different institutions gave information about their undergraduate and graduate programmes. The different books and curriculum were a matter of discussion in the fair. The students were given enough time to interact with the experts and to get the replies to their queries. They were also given sufficient time to go through the books and purchase them. The main motto of the fair was to enlarge their knowledge of any subject incorporated/included in their curriculum. The famous writers of the various books were also present in the fair whom the students could meet. The fair started with a cultural Programme and ended with a Seminar after seven days. The organizers of the Fair were happy to see the response and took the decision to organize it after every four months. The fair was inaugurated by the President of Sahitya Sabha. It was truly an enlightening fair.

(b) What are M. Hamel’s views about the French language?

Answer: M. Hamel said that the French language was the most beautiful language in the world. It was the clearest, the most logical; that they must guard it among them and never forget it.

 

(c) What is the irony inherent in Saheb’s full name?

Answer: Saheb’s full name is “Saheb-e-Alam. The irony inherent is that he does not know what it means. If he knew its meaning as lord of the universe then he would have a hard time believing it for his living status.

Answer: The children in Firozabad or the young inhabitants of Firozabad work in the dark hutments with flames of flickering oil lamps and welding pieces of coloured glass into circles of bangles. Their eyes are more adjusted to the dark than to the light outside. So/That is why; they often lose their eyesight before they become adults.

Answer: The Champaran episode was a turning-point and so significant in Gandhi’s life. Because, after the episode, he learned courage and could declare that the British could not order him about in his own country. His politics were intertwined with the practical, with a new free Indian who could stand on his own feet and thus make India free.

 

 

(g) What was incongruous about the delicate bow which fastened the apron strings of Sophie’s mother? (Not in the syllabus of 2021)

Answer: M. Hamel’s last day at school was a sorrowful one. M. Hamel was very sorry for the last moment of the school.   When everyone was writing at that time, M. Hamel was sitting motionless in his chair and gazing/staring one thing to another as if he wanted to attach/fix all things in his mind. He had been there for forty years with his garden outside the window and his class in front of him just like that. Only the desks and benches had been worn smooth.

On the last day, M. Hamel wore his beautiful green coat, his frilled shirt and the little black silk cap which were all embroidered. Actually, these were worn only on inspection and prize days. But, he used it for the last day at school. He taught very beautifully and clearly all the lessons like reciting, grammars, writings, history and so on that day. He wanted to give his students all the knowledges that he had known.

He realized and mentioned the fault of Alsace. He blamed himself and the parents for the low quality of education of his students.

Finally, he was very pale at the last moment and wrote “Vive La France” and leaned his head against the wall he made gesture that the school was dismissed- they might go.

(c) “The battle of Champaran is won, “Gandhi exclaimed. Explain the context in which this was said.

Or: why and when did Gandhi declare: “The battle of Champaran is won.”

Answer: Rajendra Prasad, Brij Kishor Babu, Maulana Mazharul and several other prominent lawyers had arrived from Bihar to help Gandhi for the sharecroppers and the case. Gandhi asked the lawyers what they would do if he was sentenced to prison.  Then, the senior lawyer replied negatively that they would go home.

Rajendra Prasad and the lawyers consulted that Gandhi was totally a stranger, and yet he was prepared to go to prison for the sake of the peasants. So, if they would go home then it would be shameful. So, they accordingly went back to Gandhi and said that they were ready to follow him into jail. Then Gandhi exclaimed that “The battle of Champaran is won’’.

Describe Tishani’s journey to the end of the earth – the Antarctic region, and his experience during that journey. (Not in syllabus of 2021)

Though both Mr. Lamb and Derry suffer from a physical disability, their attitudes to life are very different.”

Justify the relevance of this statement with reference to the story, “On the Face of it”?

 

Ans:  Though both Mr. Lamb and Derry suffer from a physical disability, but their attitude to life is different.

Derry’s one side of his face is burnt. Once, he got acid all down that side of his face. Then, it burned all away and ate his face up. So, Derry feels that everyone is afraid of him at seeing his face. So, he always wants to away from the people and lives alone.

But, Mr. Lamb is totally different attitude to life from Derry. Mr. Lamb perceives things in positive manner. According to him, everybody has got two arms, two legs, two eyes and two ears, also has got a tongue and a brain.
