1.Read the following passage carefully:

So the ships were brought into the duck and the passengers began to go ashore. But Mr. Escombe had sent word to the captain that, as the whites were highly enraged against me and my life was in danger, my family and I should be advised to land at dusk, when the port superintendent Mr. Tatum would escort us home. The captain communicated the massage to me. And agree to me act accordingly. But scarcely half an hour after this, Mr. Laughton came to the captain. He said : I would like to take Mr. Gandhi with me, should he have no objection. As the legal adviser of the agent company I tell you that you are not bound to carry out the massage you have received from Mr. Escombe.’ After this he came to me and said somewhat to this effect: If you are not afraid, I suggest that Mrs. Gandhi and the children should drive to Mr. Rustomji’s  house. Whilst you and I follow them on foot. I don’t at all like the idea if your entering the city like a thief in the night. I do not think there is any fear of anyone hurting you. Everything is quiet now. The whites have all dispersed. But in any case I am convinced that you ought not to enter the city stealthily.’ I readily agreed. My wife and children drove safely to Mr. Rustomji’s palce with the captain’s permission I went ashore with Mr. Laugthon. Mr. Rustomji’s house was about two miles from the duck.

                       Today,/in the last week,  the students and the teachers of ABC Higher Secondary School organized a Swacha Bharat Abhiyan/ Cleanness Week and drove in the school campus. The work/The programme started at 9 am, date 9-02-2017 and ended at 4 pm, date-15-02-2017. More than two hundred students and sixteen teachers had participated the Swachcha Bharat Abhiyan / Cleanness Week. All the students and teachers took brooms in hands and cleaned the whole school campus. There were several dustbins installed in different places and collected the garbage in there. Answer: Franz anticipated a great bustle of the opening and closing of desks, lessons repeated in unison very loud with their hands over their ears to understand better, and the teacher’s great ruler rapping on the table in the classroom. (a) Give a detailed account of the scene in the classroom on the day of the last lesson.

Answer: Ans:        The order from Berlin caused or affected warmly in the school and on the village people that day. Franz noticed that there were no any great bustle/noise, nothing the sound of opening and closing desks, not lessons repeated in unison with very loud, and not the teacher’s great ruler rapping on the table. That day, everything was as quiet as Sunday morning. Also, Franz was not scolded/rebuked for his very late to school.  On that day, M. Hamel wore his beautiful green coat, his frilled shirt and the little black silk cap which were worn only on inspection and prize days.

The whole school seemed so strange and solemn.  The back benches were filled up by the village people like the old Hauser with his three-cornered hat, the former mayor, the former postmaster and several others. They were looking sad for the last lesson of French language.  All the lessons like reciting, grammars, writings, history were taught on that day. Specially, M. Hamel taught very beautifully on the last lesson. Surprisingly, little Franz heard very carefully and understood all the lessons.

(b) “The battle of Champaran is won’, Gandhi exclaimed. Explain the context in which this was said.

Answer: Rajendra Prasad, Brij Kishor Babu, Maulana Mazharul and several other prominent lawyers had arrived from Bihar to help Gandhi for the sharecroppers and the case. Gandhi asked the lawyers what they would do if he was sentenced to prison.

Then, the senior lawyer replied negatively that they would go home.

Rajendra Prasad and the lawyers consulted that Gandhi was totally a stranger, and yet he was prepared to go to prison for the sake of the peasants. So, if they would go home then it would be shameful. So, they accordingly went back to Gandhi and said that they were ready to follow him into jail. Then Gandhi exclaimed that “The battle of Champaran is won’’.

(c) Describe the miserable plight of the people of Firozabad.

Answer:. Every other family in Firozabad is engaged in making bangles. More than 20000 children also engage on it. None of them know that it is illegal. The children work in the glass furnaces with high temperatures, in dingy cells without air and light. They slog their daylight hours an often losing the brightness of their eyes.

They live in stinking lanes choked with garbage where they remain hovels with crumbling walls, wobbly doors and no windows. They live in crowded with families of humans and animals coexisting in a primeval state. They are born in the cast of bangle makers. They have seen nothing except bangles, in the house, in the yard, in every other house, every other yard, every street in Firozabad.

Their eyes are more adjusted to the dark than to the light outside. That is why; they often end up losing their eyesight before they become adults. They have not enjoyed even one full meal in their entire lifetime. They do not know anything except bangles. They cannot dare to change it for the police and the middlemen.

What impressions do you from of Mr. Lamb? How does look at life?

Answer:

                 Mr. Lamb is a person who does not care or take any tension about his body. He gives attention on his mind and the beauty of his heart. For him, a handsome person cannot handsome if his heart is bad/worse. I am very much impression for his practical and natural life with his garden and his environment. His thinking’s and his manners as a man affects on me.

 

Mr. Lamb perceives things in positive manner at life. According to him, everybody has got two arms, two legs, two eyes and two ears, also has got a tongue and a brain. So, he or she can get on the way which she or he wants like all the rest. If he or she chooses and sets his or her mind to it, then he or she can get on better than all the rest in their life.

Derry thought that Mr. Lamb’s garden was an empty place and the house was an empty one. He didn’t know there was anybody there. So, Derry entered the garden to achieve/get some peace and stay alone for a little while/a moment.

                Derry entered Mr. Lamb’s garden by climbing the garden wall.

Answer: Derry’s one side of his face was burnt. Once, he got acid all down that side of his face. Then, it burned it all away and ate his face up.
