Rise of Scrutiny and its influence on literature




         Scrutiny: A Quarterly Review was a journal and a literature periodical. It was started in 1932 by L. C. Knights and F. R. Leavis. They were the principal editors until the final issue which was in 1953. D. W. Harding and Harold Andrew Mason were other editors of Scrutiny. Boris Fond, a literary critic and historian, mentioned that scrutiny was the idea of ‘L. C. Knights’ for creating such a literary quarterly. L. C. Knights took steps to start ‘Scrutiny’ broadly on Knight’s 26th birthday on 15 May 1932. L. C. Knights served in that role for every one of its 76 issues. The first issue of Scrutiny appeared in May, 1932. In the first week, it was sold 100 copies and included subscribers like T.S. Eliot, George Santayana, Aldous Huxley and R. H. Tawney. In 1940, it was published 1000 copies and in 1950, it was published 1500 copies. Scrutiny was widely read as a literary piece for the literary writings and publicities, as Leavis became most influential in 20th century also.   
In scrutiny, many writing articles were published for the development of literature. Literary critics like William Empson, Herbert Read, I. A. Richards, etc contributed many articles on literatures. Many contributors focused on education, politics, societies, religions and so on. According to Richard Poirier, it was most important achievement for complete revaluation of English Literature. John Grant stated that Scrutiny supported the English literature as a high point of view. John Grant also considered Scrutiny as produced the most influential literature of Empson and Richards and disregarded critics in the colonies like Blackmur, Frye and Burke.
According to Poirier, Scrutiny was more respect and denunciation than most of the quarterly in English Literature. For him, Scrutiny was most specialized and being right for English literature and its development. It was so easy to feel and it possessed standard of all the English Literary works. It was judged to be best for literature during that time also in 20th century.  
Scrutiny was a unique for the most influential movement in modern British literary criticism. F. R. Leavis and other collaborators of Scrutiny demonstrated a compelling ways of reading Shakespeare and the texts of advertising. Scrutiny offered the reader a way of teaching critical reading on English Literature. It was a piece of literature which approached for schools and adult education. It was a literary talk which guided to English Literature and its development. The ideas and the piece of works of knowledges were influential in universities as far afield as Colombo and Sydney.
It guided and turned into a movement of English literature. Scrutiny showed how a small critical turned into a movement with an international reach. It helped to analyzing the pattern of social origins and subsequent careers in English Literature of 20th century with social changes. Scrutiny approached champion of creative writing and progressive education based on English literature. It affected the Modern English literature also. Scrutiny explored complexities of literature and interpreted of modern culture. Scrutiny interpreted the social class and popular class for the English literature’s tradition. Scrutiny examined most figures of many teachers, scholars, writers and most influential persons for the English literature.
In present situation, Scrutiny is remaining as a most influential literary piece for English Literature and journal. Each generation of original writers had to create the taste by which Scrutiny is understood. Certainly, one can see that a new critical method has grown up alongside modern literature, a method that is now entering even the colleges and affecting educational system.  Among its most elaborated products and most celebrated among literary people in America at least are seven types of ambiguity by William Empson, and the Double Agent by R. P. Blackmur.  The methods have been carried to numbers of text-books. It is good to know understanding poetry and it is better to know Empson and Blackmur.
