2017—6.What did the postmaster do after he had received Lencho’s letter?
Ans:-
At first, the postmaster laughed. But, he became/turned serious. He did not want to shake(দুৰ্বল কৰা) the writer’s(Lencho’s) faith in God. So, he decided to answer to the letter. But, after he had known the Lencho’s money problem, he collected seventy pesos from his employees, several friends and from his salary. After that, he provided the money to Lencho by a letter with a signature of ‘God’.

 *How did the rain change? What happened to Lencho’s fields after the hail stopped?

Answer 
         The rain was pouring down. But suddenly, a strong wind began to blow and very large hailstones began to fall along with the rain.(1 Mark)
         All the crops in Lencho's fields were destroyed. The flowers were gone from the plants. Not a leaf remained on the trees.(1 Mark)

Or   At first, the big drops of rain began to fall as/like Lencho’s predicted (আকাশবাণী). He was very happy at that moment and said the rain drops as ‘new coins’. But, unfortunately, a strong wind began to blow. Also, very large hailstones began to fall along with the rain. Thus, the rain had changed. (2 Marks)
            The hail rained on the house, the garden, the hillside, the cornfield and on the whole valley for an hour. The field was white as if covered with salt. Not a leaf remained on the trees. The corn was totally destroyed. The flowers were gone from the plants. So, Lencho was so sad to see these.(2 Marks)

*What were Lencho’s feelings when the hail stopped?

            Lencho's soul was filled with sadness, after the hail had stopped. He suspected (
আশংকা কৰা) a bleak (শূন্য) future for him and his family. He was worried (চিন্তিত হোৱা) about lack of (অভাৱ) food for the coming year. He felt that his hardworking became nothing just zero/empty.

Ans:-
No, absolutely not. Lencho was not so/at all surprised to find the letter with the seventy pesos. Instead, he suspected the post office employees in case of the other thirty pesos. Because, he had deep faith in God.

        Lencho asked God for one hundred pesos. But, he found only seventy pesos in the letter. He thought that the post office employees had stolen/captured the other thirty pesos. So, he was made angry by the thought.

*Write a few words about the post master and his noble character.
Ans-The postmaster was a fat and amiable fellow. He was an honest person and a helpful person. At first, he laughed at the Lencho’s latter. But, he kept the faith in God by Lencho. He was also one kind hearted person and so he sent to Lencho seventy pesos from collection of their employees, several friends also himself from his salary.

2017—7.What did Valli see on her way that made her laugh?     2
Ans:- Valli saw a young cow whose tail was high in the air. It was running right in front of the bus in the middle of the road. When the driver sounded his horn loudly, then the cow frightened. After that, in the more honks, the cow started running faster and faster right in front of the bus. Valli found so amusing that she had tears in her eyes. At last, the cow moved off the road.
*What was a source of unending joy for Valli? What was her strongest/deepest desire?

Answer


A source of unending joy for Valli was the sight of the bus which travelled between her village and the nearest town.  It filled with a new set of passengers each time.  It passed through her street each hour.
Her strongest desire was to ride on that/the bus just once. This desire happened in her mind after she had seen the bus many days.
*What did Valli find out about the bus journey? How did she find out these details?

Answer

             Valli found out that the town was six miles from her village. The fare was thirty paise one way. The trip to the town took forty-five minutes. On reaching the town, if she stayed in her seat and paid another thirty paise, she could return home on the same bus.
She found out these details by listening carefully to the conversations between her neighbours and the people who regularly used the bus. She also gained information by asking a few discrete questions from a well-dressed man.
*Why does the conductor call Valli ‘madam’?

Answer

               In the bus, Valli behaves as a more mature girl than her age. She is trying to look overconfident and smart. The conductor is amused at her behaviour. So, he uses the word ‘madam’ to match her behaviours.
* Why does Valli stand up on the seat? What does she see now/then?

Answer

            Valli stands up on her seat because her view is cut off by a canvas blind. She wants to see the outside but she does not. So, she stands up to look over the blind.
             Now/then, she sees that the road is very narrow. On one side, there is the canal and beyond it are palm trees, grassland, distant mountains, and the blue sky. On the other side, there is a deep ditch and many acres of green fields

2017—Give a description of the magnificent view of tea garden seen by Rajvir from the railway train.                               3 marks
Ans- Outside the train, there were most beautiful scenery. The scenery was fulfilled with beautiful tea gardens and the greenery scenery everywhere. The soft green paddy fields gave way to tea bushes. Against the backdrop of densely wooded hills, a sea of tea bushes stretched. Dwarfing the tiny tea plants were under the tall sturdy shade trees. In the distant, there was an ugly building with smoke billowing out of tall chimneys.
            These were seen by Rajvir from the railway train.
*Narrate briefly Rajvir’s remarks on the discovery of the tea and the legends that surround it. Or Write the Chinese legend and Indian Legend About Tea.
Ans:- There were two legends about the discover of tea.
Chinese Legend:
According to the Chinese legend, once upon a time there was a Chinese emperor. He always boiled water before drinking it. One day, a few leaves of the twigs burning under the pot fell into the water.(/one day, a few leaves of branches burning under the pot fell into the water). It gave a delicious flavor. It was said that these (they) were the tea leaves.
Indian Legend:
According to Indian Legend, once upon a time, there was an ancient Buddhist ascetic/monk named Bodhidharma. Once, he cut off his eyelids because he felt sleepy during the meditation. After that, ten tea plants grew out of (from) the eyelids. When the leaves of these plants put in the hot water and drunk then banished his sleep. It was said that these (they) were the tea leaves.

Ans:- On both sides of the gravel-road, there were acre upon acre of tea bushes which were all neatly pruned to the same height. Groups of tea-pluckers, with bamboo baskets of their backs, wearing plastic aprons, were plucking the newly sprouted leaves.

Ans:-  At first, she is advised not to bite her nails. She is asked whether she had done her homework. Also, some characters like her thinking of the outside world, her acne, sulking, moody behaviours, these are proved that Amanda is a teenager.

Ans:- In the poem ‘Amanda’, Amanda’s mother is speaking to Amanda. Because, usually a mother only asks her child like the questions.

Ans:- If Amanda were a Rapunzel, she would live in a tower with tranquil(শান্ত) and rare(অগতনাগতিক). Then, she would certainly never let down her bright hair.

Ans:- No, she is not an orphan. Already, her mother is saying something in the poem.
       She simply imagines as an orphan. For her, if she would be an orphan, then she would get the freedom and she would roam the street freely. Also, she could pattern soft dust with her hushed by bare feet.
*Do you know the story of Rapunzel? Why does Amanda want to be Rapumzel?
Ans: Rapunzel was a golden- haired girl who had been kept in a tower by a witch. Amanda thinks that Rapunzel’s life in the lonely tower must have been very happy and wonderful also tranquil and rare. That is why she wants to be Rapunzel.
*What does the girl or Amanda yearn for?
And:-  Amanda yearns for some freedom so that she could enjoy her growing years. So, she wants to a mermaid, an orphan and a Rapunzel which would be provided her much freedom in her life.

Ans:- Amanda’s mother advises Amanda not to bite her nails, not to haunch her shoulders, to stop her slouching and to sit up straight. Also, she advises her not to eat that chocolate and give up that sulking

*“Belinda tickled him, she tickled him unmerciful ……” Why?
Ans:    Belinda and her pets used to laugh at the dragon for its cowardice. She tickled him to taunt and make fun of him.

Ans:    The pirate had black bushy beard and a wooden leg. He had pistols in his hands and a sharp cutlass in his teeth. It was clear from his activities that he meant no good.
* How did Custard dragon face/attack the pirate?

Or: what did the pirate do when he was attacked by Belinda’s dragon.

Ans:   
Custard faced the pirate boldly. He jumped up, snorted like an engine and clashed his tails like irons in a dungeon. Then, making a clattering and clanking sound and squirming, he attacked the pirate like a robin at a worm.
At that time, the pirate gaped at Custard. He drank some wine from the bottle in his pocket. He fired two bullets, but the bullets did not hit Custard.
At last, the Dragon gobbled the pirate and he was died.
          Thus, Custard had saved Belinda and other pets from the Pirate.
*What is a ballad?
Ans:- A ballad is a song or poem that tells a story. It is also narrated tales of courage or heroism or parody.
*How did Belinda and her pets behave when they saw the pirate climbing on the window?
Ans:-Seeing the pirate on the window, Belinda paled and cried for help. Mustard, the dog fled with a terrified yelp. Ink jumped down to bottom of the house and Blink, the mouse took shelter in a mouse hole. Only, Custard the dragon faced the pirate.

Ans: Mustard said that he had been twice as brave only if he were not confused. Ink and Blink said that they had been thrice as brave as they thught.
          Custard dragon in reply said that he agreed with them. He acknowledged that everybody was braver than he.

Ans:- After killing the pirate, Custard dragon was given a warm reception. Belinda embraced him, Mustard licked him and Ink and Blink moved circling round him.
